Marking Motion
January 7 – 22, 2005
Curated by Kristen Chappa

Marking Motion is a cross-disciplinary group exhibition which fuses the world of movement with mark making. These artists range from formally trained dancers to those whose research for visual expression is based in a fascination with patterned or impulsive movement. Using this unique vocabulary, the body in motion serves as a catalyst for the work as well as a material itself, tracing wingspan and tracking motion. The marks these artists make are an investigation and visual record of time and action as described in the mediums of painting, performance, site-specific drawing, and collaborative installation. This graceful yet physical work studies the language of the body and personal movement as individual expression. These artists merge the three-dimensional space of dance and motion with the two-dimensional space of the captured image. Audience members will have the rare opportunity to see the process of live artmaking in this challenging and experimental intersection of performance and exhibition. Marking Motion is curated in conjunction with Baggage Claim, a performance choreographed by Paula Plessas and Ann Robideaux of PPAR dance, which will take place inside of the Marking Motion exhibition.
